Michael: No, I’m just a narcissist who was too self-involved to see the truth.
Rita: That makes no sense to me.
Michael: Yeah, maybe you’re right. Maybe I’m being too hard on myself.
Trevor: Do you have any idea what a “sleepover” is? Cause it’s not just sleep.
Rita: I know what it is, Trevor, I’ve seen your secret magazine. I want to have grown-up fun. Spoon and figgy pudding. Rabbitown dum druggary’s hollow. And I want to have pop-pop.
Trevor: Well, the very fact that you call it that, tells me you’re not ready.

In Epi3 she points the tail of her racoon-cap (microphone?) at Michael when she asks about his family, so I’m pretty sure she’s not rita-rded at all but some sort of spy. Cheers.

Back to Rita - she must be "special" or at least pretending to be so. All the clues already mentioned in this thread point to it, plus, Rita didn’t know the meaning of the word ’impune’ when Michael said it to her. She just repeated the word out loud and seemed confused.

I think Rita was having a little too much fun "riding" the space shuttle before lunch. If you know what I mean.
Also the Rita/Ritarded/bRITAain thing is awesome, what about Ritalin? Isn’t that what they give to kids to focus on school? Hmmm...

I was sure that Rita’s difficulty was kinda obvious, but evidently not to everyone as evidenced by my conversation last night with my sister, who was watching Forget-Me-Now for the first time:
Her: "Hey, what’s the significance of that bench? It says Wee Britain, which has ’Rita’ in the middle of it. Is she not really British or something?"
Me: "Nono, they do something with it after this. Just wait for it."
Then it gets to where the bench says "Wee Brain".
Me: "See?"
Her: "No... Brain?"
Me: "No, see, it says ’Wee Brain’."
Her: "I don’t get it."
Me: "Well... you know... because she’s special..."
Her: *shocked* "SHE’S MENTALLY CHALLENGED?!" *bursts into laughter*
It was rather amusing for both of us.

Rita is so cool
And I commend Charlize for taking this role because the show isn’t as highly watched as Desperate Housewives for example, but she goes and creates this great character that personally could become my favorite. After Maeby and GOB and George Micheal.

I just got finished watching the whole of season 3 a couple of nights ago and couldn’t stop talking about how awesome Rita was and how I would love to have a woman like her.... and my friend just kept making off remarks like "yeah she’s your type", etc. and I had no idea what his problem was.
Then I realized her character was mentally disabled.
She had me completly fooled with her charm.

It’s the accent. It masks a lot. I know I take advantage of it to talk a load of bleep and no one really notices.
Nobody else probably notices, because you generally don’t pick up on these things when it’s not your own, but every so often her accent goes a little off and it just distracts me a bit.

This is probably a stretch, but is it possible that the Rita character was inspired by David Cross’s America’s Cutest Retards comment? Even though she isn’t American, she is definately the cutest retard I’ve ever seen.
