Houston area AD fans meet here

Postby Kiarnit » February 19th, 2005, 5:44 pm

I'm starting this thread for Houston-area AD fans who want to plan local activities and discuss them on the boards. I know that iheartgob and a couple of other volunteers have already been having discussions in e-mail, but perhaps more posters would like to show themselves and get involved here in this thread.

Premiere, so far I have three volunteers listed in the Houston area, including you, but I'm sure we have more people from the Houston area visiting the site. C'mon guys, post in here! The more, the merrier!

I'm a Houston girl! Yay!

We've planned to put up flyers at UH-downtown and Rice. Probably this weekend and next weekend (of course) and then my friends and I are going to go to Memorial Park and wear shirts on the 6th and maybe on the 5th, too.

Premiere, do you have any ideas?

I'm definitely up for visiting the schools this weekend. As for those days you wanted to go to Memorial, I have to make sure there's nothing I have to be at, cause otherwise me and some friends and family will probably come (it's much easier to convert family members though). I'm also going to print up[ as many of those stickers as possible if they are put in pdf format, so I could bring some of those this weekend. I'm a little short on ideas for the time being, but I think I gave you my number in an e-mail so if you want some help this weekend, I'm definitely willing to go.

I'm in Houston, I'm 18, and I attend HCC Pinemont...

I could put up a couple posters at some music venues, I'll be going to some shows this weekend...

I've been doing all I can to spread the show by word of mouth, I've gotten most of my friends hooked on it, and a few have bought DVDs. If anyone would wanna have a big houston AD viewing party, maybe on a friday or saturday where select episodes would be screened, food would be served, and letters written/mailed, that would be cool, too.

I wish I could find some Arrested Development shirts with the logo, or something that wasn't TOO obscure a reference. I think that's the reason people have trouble getting into the show, is because at first everything is so vague and unclear, most of the posters and shirts I've seen don't really pique curiosity about the show.

I'm definitely willing to help with a viewing party, but someone would have to volunteer a venue, because I can help with food or DVDs or anything else that might be needed, but I can't help when it comes to owning a place to put it all in.

For right now, there's always the FOX "Meet the Bluths" t-shirt, which does at least say "Arrested Development" on it. I know we do plan to put out a SaveOurBluths t-shirt that has the name of the show on it, but it's going to be a little while before we actually get them produced.

Regarding a venue for showing DVDs: look into reserving a room on the U of H or Rice campus, esp. if you or someone you know is a student there. You should be able to make arrangements to do that for free. You may be able to reserve a room that already has A/V equipment in it, or you may be able to bring in your own. Like at Rice, the residential colleges (Hanszen, Wiess, etc.) had, as I recall, common areas where you could watch TV and so on. There's a Rice AD group in Facebook that I signed up for as an alumna, so I could message them.

ALL HOUSTON ADERS:

I am currently trying to get a real plan in motion to have a viewing party in the week prior to the season finale at the University of Houston-Downtown (or, if any of you have a better place, wherever you think we can attract more people). Anyone who wants to get in contact me and start this, get at me at my e-mail, jacobmustafa@yahoo.com . We need to start getting things moving NOW.

Hey guys. I definitely would've responded earlier by having some kind of viewing party for the finale, but I just found this site! I'm not the most available person on the planet but I can definitely help out with things now and then. Also would love to get together with AD fans now and then.

Premiere, one of my housemates and I will be coming to your shindig at U of H - Downtown, and my sister may be coming too. When you know exactly where you're going to hold it and what time you want to start, I will message people in the Rice Facebook AD interest group.

Cool. A certain member here (I know his real name but cannot remmeber his screen name here) has brought to my attention a place about 5 minutes from UH-D with a huge screen and capacity for 50 people that costs 250 to rent. I'm trying to see if this is better than having it here in the school (while there are certainly places that seat more than 50 here, there are none that are rentable). If it is, we can get it sometime next week and have it there. I need to figure this all out quick though, because the finale is amazingly soon and this party is sooner. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

If you have it at this rented venue, it won't be legal (I don't think) to show the DVDs without paying licensing fees if the venue is a bar or restaurant that's selling food and drink to patrons who are coming in to watch the DVDs. The problem is when the holder of the venue is making ancillary profits off of people who are coming in to watch the DVD (as opposed to broadcast TV, which is being broadcast for free). If you're just renting an auditorium-type space and not charging admission, then I don't think licensing is an issue.

You're watching the season finale on the night of the party, right? Also, do you think more than 50 people are actually likely?

OK, I just got done talking to the student activities people here at UH-D, and while not nearly as nice as the place we had first thought of, the tune of free sounds a whole lot betetr. Plus, it seems the audotorium has a huge pull-down screen. You have to have a student organization underwrite such an event if you want a free rental; thankfully, I write for the newspaper (I knew that piece of crap job would come in handy one day). So, if all things go according to plan, we'll have free space for as many people as we can get and all anybody will have to pay for are refreshments.

I know these are a lot of changes in one day, but as long as i can have something planned by the end of the week, I will have enough time to put up flyers and get them approved and get quite a few people at our viewing party.

Cool! What about signal reception or a cable feed for the local FOX affiliate? (I have no idea what the A/V facilities are; I assume bringing in a DVD player or DVD-capable laptop and hooking it up to a projector won't be a challenge.)
