Come on Down to South Park

There are shows other than Arrested Development? Really?

Simpsons Seasons 1-8 > (Family Guy)*10
Simpsons Seasons 9-10 ≅ Family Guy Seasons 1-3
(Family Guy)*10 > Simpsons Seasons 11-16
Family Guy Season 4 ≅ Simpsons Season 17

You CANNOT use the brilliance of earlier work to champion the greatness of mediocre late work. Would you apply that principle to music? Would you say every season of SNL is good because SOME were good?

Quite a few Family Guy fans suck, but not the ones on here. And for the record, Family Guy haters suck just as much. But again, not necessarily the ones here.

Back on topic, though, I can't believe that you guys can honestly say that last night's episode was on the same level as when they tore apart Sundance, or Scientology, or censorship, or any of the other things they've torn into in the past. It didn't bring ANY new perspective to its topic, and worse, it put the satire before the comedy. That's SUCH a bad sign.

has the family guy camp issued some sort of response? or will we have to wait like a year and a half until they write and episode and or gag and it gets animated? im curious as to why the simpsons and family guy dont take advantage of the south park animation system and produce episodes that can basically immediatley ridicule something.
I just blue myself.

That's not exactly how I'd view it. I don't forgive the Simpsons for the crappiness of their more recent work. But the Simpsons at the top of it's game, on a scale of 1-10 was an 11...and that was sustained for ~22 episodes for 6-7 seasons. Family Guy, at the top of it's game was like a 9.5 on the same scale, and that might be scattered over a few episodes in a given season. You can't just average out the good with the bad.

If your favorite band released 20 albums, 8 of which were universally applauded classics, I'm sure you'd be willing to overlook the 12 duds (all of whom aren't duds). It's not like you'd change your favorite band to the Foo Fighters (just a somewhat random example), who've released a few SOLID but not awe-inspiring albums, just because they haven't fallen from grace the way your favorite band has. You remember the best, not the worst. I mean, when you think of AD, do you say, damn that was the best show ever (I do) or do you say, you know what, there were some classics but what was the deal with the Tobias/hair transplant thing - it wasn't as good as I remember? If the Simpsons went out after season 10 or 11, yeah, they'd probably be remembered a little more fondly but I think the relative suckiness of the later episodes should just make you appreciate how impossibly great the earlier ones were and realize that such genius, for such a long time, will not be produced for a LONG time.

I don't like doing the Simpsons/FG argument for 2 reasons: I'm so firmly in the Simpsons camp and this is an argument of opinions, which rarely result in one side "winning" or "losing."

Lol, I like how there's a Simpsons/FG debate going on in the South Park thread.

Anyway, I thought the episode was okay.

I think we're all losing sight of the real issue at hand.
The imminent threat of Kangaroo Sharks can no longer be ignored.

The only thing I have a problem with is when people start saying, Family Guy sucks because it's juvenile and random. As if that's something that Family Guy fans never noticed before. Or worse, when they say that all Family Guy fans watch for obligatory and cheap references. Which is just a crock of bleep. I watch it and laugh at the subtle and witty moments. I laugh not because James Woods is featured in an episode, but because they had him say the line, "Ooh! A piece of candy." about 25 times in a row. The thing about Family Guy is (and the difference between it and South Park or Simpsons), if you take it seriously or analyze it, you already don't get it.

Now when it stops being funny, it will suck HARD. But for right now, there are certainly PLENTY of shows that deserve to be beaten up more than Family Guy, and there's no reason to say a show is crap just because it isn't AS good as one of the top shows in the last decade.

vcalzone, I'd like to know what you think about Family Guy's replay value. Way back when I use to own the Family season 1 and 2 box set. I thought the show was pretty good until I watched the episodes a couple times and I found I couldn't laugh at them anymore. That is one of the big reasons I don't like Family Guy. Sure I like watching the new episodes for a couple laughs but I could say the samething about a lot of other shows. I love shows that make me laugh at something new every time I watch it but I don't think Family Guy offers that.

Furthermore Kangaroo Sharks and Shark Kangaroos are no laughing matter. Take them seriously... or you will die.

Family Guy has no replay value, simple as that. Granted, most episodes (at least in Seasons 1-3, anyway) have plenty of laughs the first time around, but they quickly stop once you know the jokes. Which is why I'm surprised Family Guy does so well in the DVD market... isn't the whole point of buying something on DVD so you can watch it again and again?

Gimpace wrote:Season 10 was pretty good though. It is in my opinion the last classic season of the Simpsons.

I don't want to start another Simpsons argument or anything, but seriously, how can you say that? Season 10 had horrible episodes like The Old Man and the C-Student, Marge Simpson in Screaming Yellow Honkers, and *shudder* Monty Can't Buy Me Love. Granted, there were some decent episodes, but even they weren't THAT good when compared to Seasons 4-8's episodes. Granted, I don't think Season 10 is as bad as Seasons 11 and 12 were, but I would never call it classic.

Anyway, I thought this episode was awesome. Definitely better than the first few episodes of this season (and the last few of Season 9, too). The digs and criticisms of Family Guy were spot-on. Granted, the show does have the potential to be very funny, but it's been going downhill ever since its return, so I wasn't complaining at all when I saw this. I loved the captioned videos. "The jokes are all inter-changable and irrelevant to the plot!" (not a new criticism at Family Guy in any way, but just funny to have it coming from a muslim leader)

I'm hoping they do a second part, though I wouldn't exactly be surprised if they didn't (the whole "Will Comedy Central puss out and not air it?" thing leads me to believe they might). South Park's two-parters in the past have been very average, but if a second part to this is anywhere near as good as the first part was, I can't wait to see it. :)

I have the first three seasons on DVD, and I've definitely seen those episodes more than a few times. Again, you can't look at it to be funny for the moments like stupid references or jokes done for shock value. But the little, throwaway jokes are the ones that hold up to repeat viewings. It's not the kind of thing that I can watch as much as my Simpsons DVDs or AD DVDs, but they're still nice to have when I'm in the mood for them. I don't have the fourth season on DVD, and I haven't really planned on getting it, but I've enjoyed it more when seeing the reruns on Adult Swim than I thought I would.

Of course, I don't really plan on buying the Simpsons DVDs past season 8, either. Though I can't wait to see You Only Move Twice or El Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro Homer again. And I haven't bought South Park DVDs at all, though part of that was just that I'd seen every episode so many times already. Honestly, I feel like some episodes of South Park don't have very much replay value, either. As I've said before, my favorite episodes are the ones that rely on silliness and absurdity, not topicality. Though I DID laugh my ass off when Trapper Keeper first aired.

Family Guy has no replay value?

Then how come the dvds and adult swim reruns did so well that the show came back? I think South Park is one of the worst rewatchable shows. I would never consider buying the dvds because it's a show that you watch when it airs just to see what the big issue is that's being parodied this week and maybe watch it once more, but after that it just gets boring. But in terms of replay, Family Guy is no AD, but it's worth it to get the dvds because the shows are more memorable and can be watched more times without getting old.

I've always viewed Season 8 as the climax of the show. Season 9 and 10 weren't as good as previous seasons plot wise but they still had some funny Jokes. I agree that 10 had some awful plots but it was still the same old Simpsons humor we loved for the most part. Mike Scully sure liked to introduce supernatural ideas didn't he? Anyway season 10 had some great episodes too like, Lard of the Dance, D'oh-in' In The Wind, Lisa Gets An A and instant classic Homer To The Max. That is just naming a few. For the most part the season was classic, the plots were getting a bit worse but the show was still really funny.

Family Guy has no replay value?

Would you say Full House has good replay value then?

Can we at least all agree that Robot Chicken is the worst adult cartoon ever? :) Well now that I've opened a new can of worms, I'm off. Enjoy.

I have the first three seasons of Family Guy on DVD. I used to replay them all the time. I do enjoy watching them again, especially any episodes in which Brian and Stewie interact. I think it's because of the delivery of certain lines. If the "acting" is good than it's easy to watch something again because it can still make you laugh. I think that's also another reason why AD is so rewatchable. Not only because of the many jokes, but the way the actors deliver each line. It can still make me laugh, even if I've already seen it a million times.

I'm with those who say South Park isn't very rewatchable. I do prefer it to Family Guy, so I'm guessing the reason I would not watch it over is because the animation is simpler and the jokes more obvious, so there's little chance that I missed anything the first time around.
