Musicals (renamed)

Postby PirateLawyer » January 22nd, 2006, 9:53 pm

so who likes Broadway music here? Anyone

my friend recently got the "Avenue Q" soundtrack. It's one of the strangest/funniest things I've heard....

edit:
I renamed the thread to make it fair to those who've seen musicals in other places

I'm not trying to be negative here or start an argument. But I don't like it. It seems kind of ridiculous.

But I know a lot of people like it, and that's fine with me :D

I had a chance to see Avenue Q in the fall and it was hillarious!!
I ADORE Broadway music!! But I'm a theater major so I guess that would be kinda obvious. Last month I saw Spamalot and now I'm even more obsessed with the soundtrack than I was when I bought it in July. (I also got to meet the cast, so now I'm also a little obsessed with Hank Azaria)
Hopefully sometime this year I'll get the chance to see the revival of Sweeney Todd, from what I hear its phenominal

Right up top! Me too! (well, double major with Writing, but same thing) And yeah, I'm a big Broadway fan. I love Avenue Q and have only recently realized how much like Sesame Street it actually is (I couldn't sleep one night and it was all that was on TV and John Tartaglia, who played Princeton and Rod in the original Ave. Q cast, was Ernie!) Seriously, the way the characters interact is perfect!

My other current favorite is The Last Five Years, but I also love Rent (it was the first one I really loved, and one of the few I've actually seen), Parade, Ragtime, Merrily We Roll Along, Hair, Urinetown... so many. I was really impressed with Caroline or Change as well, although I like it in a really-impressed-with-it way more than a really-love-it way.

My college is doing Urinetown for our Spring musical, though I'm not the greatest singer in the world so I didnt get in. But I told them that if I didnt get Little Sally then I didnt want to be in the play, but that was only so I could audition for Don Juan in Chicago that my good friend is directing.

That sucks you didn't get in -- Little Sally would've been a fun part to play. If it makes you feel any better, I don't get into any of the plays we do at school (of course, I'm specializing in Theatre History and Playwriting and I'm not an actor so it would be weird if they did cast me...) But Don Juan would be fun too. :D

I would love to get into more theatrics , but I lack the time and money right now.
I am, however organizing a trip this summer to Toronto's panasonic theatre to see the BLUE MAN GROUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesss!
I don't think they qualify as broadway though. :)

yeah, so, I know it's been of broadway for quite some time, but has anyone here seen Guys and Dolls? My highschool just performed it, and I had never seen it before. I've had the song 'luck be a lady' stuck in my head for days...

Yeah, they did Guys and Dolls at my school last year. I think the one that gets most stuck in my head is Marry the Man Today.

PS. My sister just came back from New York and brought me an Ave Q poster signed by Jeff Marx (the writer)! Being stuck way over on the west coast of Canada, this is very exciting for me.

I think the one's that get stuck in my head the most are Luck be a Lady and Sit Down, you're Rockin' the Boat. That show has great songs, though. I was listening to some of them on iTunes. It's weird hearing a real broadway cast sing some of them. The guy who sang 'luck be lady' at school has a much different voice from the guy who sings on the official cast recording

that Ave Q poster is awesome. I saw The Producers for a school field trip a few weeks ago, but we didn't get to hang around and get autographs, unfortunately

I dreamed last night I got on the boat to heaven. And by some chance I had brought my dice along...

Man, now it's stuck in my head. But yeah, Guys and Dolls has great music. Have you seen the movie? It's worth it just for the fact that Marlon Brado sings in it.

nope, believe it or not, this was my first time ever seeing Guys and Dolls. It was really good though...

one thing I'm wondering, though. What's Nathan's character usually like? The guy at school played him in a way I found really annoying...is Nathan annoying in any version you've seen?

Like intentionally annoying or accidentally annoying? I've never found him annoying exactly (although I'm sure I would if I were Adelaide). He's kind of sleazy, but also kind of charming (like GOB, but much smarter and less sensitive). He's like a lite version of Sky Masterson, but more kind-hearted -- he isn't just using Adelaide, and he actually loves her, but he just can't get his act together (and doesn't quite try hard enough). At least that's what he's been like in the versions I've seen, which is really just the one stage version and then the movie, so that's not a lot to go on.

I'm not really sure if he did it intentionally, but he was very whiny. It got a my nerves a bit. He definitely didn't strike me as charmingly sleazy the way this guy played him.
Now that I think about it, he played him the exact same way he played another character in the play last year. ("a funny thing happened on the way to the forum" but I think that character was meant to be annoyingly whiny)

I did find him and Adelaide's relationship sweet, in a weird sort of way. I liked Sky and Sarah's relationship. Those two played their parts excellently.
