GOB: you and dad are getting divorced?
Lucille: oh, don't worry sweetheart, nobody's going to be fighting over you...

Regarding the low rating:

Like CaptHappy said, the whole Michael-in-bed-with-the-prosecution story is a strech, and it's not exactly an original idea. But there's more going on that makes this episode sub-par. First, the whole Surely Funke thing... what the hell was this? Did the writers have a hard time coming up with ideas for Maeby or what? I mean she can be harsh at times, but pretending to be a sick kid just for money and to bum everyone out at prom when Surely dies.. that's just cruel. And I think George-Michael didn't handle it very well (and what was with the whole broken arm thing?)

Other than the writing (which for some reason seems dumbed-down), I think another reason people hate this show is because it was sort of a "sell out" episode... a big guest star which got a lot of publicity (seriously, Fox promotes the Julia Louis-Dreyfus episodes more than any other episode), AND it aired after American Idol, which is such a "pop" mainstream culture show--a complete turnaround from the "cult" show that is Arrested Development.

That being said, I still enjoy these episodes every time I watch them. "Alter Egos" may be the worst episode of Arrested Development, but it's still 10-times better than the best episode of shows like Friends or Everybody Loves Raymond.
What is wrong with you?

I'm on mushrooms! I'm on bad... mushrooms!

In response to the whole Chareth/Jareth thing, I always thought the name was Chareth - the joke being Michael couldn't even come up with an actual name to use as a pseudonym.

I must say this ep and "Justice is Blind" aren't my favourite eps, mostly because of the Maggie Lizer storyline - I really don't find Julia that funny in this role (or maybe it's just the character).
A comet, of course, is a frozen body of ice and dust formed 4.6 billion years ago. Or created 6000 years ago, depending on whether or not you're wrong.

I actually really liked this episode, mostly because of the shock I got when Maggie poured the coffee onto the floor. And the whole park scene is so funny, how Justice is running loose.

"Leash your dog, *bleep*!" That's a great line. And the way he falls over is too funny.

Also, when Maggie grabs Michael's face, and goes, "You feel sincere." I love the look on Michael's face, like "What did you just do to me?" All-in-all, one of the best visual gags episodes.

dog falling into trashcan

Funniest scene in the episode: the dog falling into the trashcan. Oh man, that just makes me laugh for the stupidest of reasons.

The Maggie Lizer episodes are my favorites from Season 1. The reason why some people think they're subpar episodes escapes me.

I am at a disadvantage being from Australia because of the fact that we have only had Season One on air so far (and repeated so often I could spew - not because I am bored of the show but because I am impatient to get to season two!)
therefore I have missed the boat with all these episodes and don't want to touch discussing episodes from other seasons as I don't want to find out more than I have already unfortunately stumbled on!
Anyway, about this episode. I love it and the following "Justice is Blind" episode...I think they are among the cleverest episodes in the humour...and the part where maggie starts to pour the coffee and misses just make me puke from laughin so much...the sound of the coffee trickling to the floor and the insane content expression on her face is just terrific!
They aren't my favourite episodes but I would rate them so much higher than they are rated on the site...Tobias as a cat is just hilarious!

I can't believe no one's mentioned the Gob storyline in this episode. Getting married on a dare is one of my fave Gob moments ever.

I can't believe no one mentions the part with Michael, GOB, and Barry in the bathroom, and when they're finished their chat, Barry goes to comb his hair and then puts his arms out just like he does on the opening of 'Happy Days' as Fonzie. Hilarious. I laughed my bleeping a** off when I first saw this.

also worth mentioning is when gob tells michael that he got some major action from some major blonde who majored in marine biology. well, since there's already one seinfeld cast member on this episode, we all know what profession george costanza pretended to have in the episode where kramer hits the golf ball into the whale's air hole...

It's a shame that the whole Gob/Wife scenario is in this episode because it's so hilarious, yet it's stuck within the Maggie Lizer storyline.
