That's actually how they advertised Arrested Development over here on The Comedy Channel before it started airing - using character-themed commercials. For example:

MEET LUCILLE BLUTH.
"Look what they've done, Michael."
SUDDENLY PENNILESS.
"Look what the homosexuals have done to me!"
EQUALLY CLUELESS.
"You can't just comb that out and reset it?"
TOTALLY HILARIOUS. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, STARTING 8:00PM ON AUGUST 1.


Not that brilliant, I know, but at least it introduced people to the characters before the show aired. And given that with an ensemble core of 9 characters in Season 1, there's quite a lot for new viewers to take in at first, so these commercials DID help prepare people for all the character-based humour the show has to offer.

[spoiler]Charlize Theron will play Michael's new girlfriend on "Arrested Development." There's something very special about her, but I promised Mitch Hurwitz that I wouldn't tell you what that is and I love the show too much to reveal its punch line.[/spoiler]

I still this if it's that big of a punchline it's not going to be tha she's 'special'. I'm still pulling for the terrorist notion.

Theron will be on board for a five-episode story arc, and her character will be British. Will she be a relative of the Mrs. Doubtfire-esque nanny played by David Cross, the lovely Mrs. Featherbottom who hails from Blackstool, England?


This is my new theory. She's a man. I know this for a fact.

But why would every blurb use the word special? Everyone seems to be trying to subtly hint it (except for Ausello, who writes, "mildly, um challenged."

I don't know about you, but I think that a reveal that the woman Michael's dating is developmentally delayed would be pretty controversial.

And wouldn't [spoiler]Theron's outfit in the spoiler pics pretty much fit with the fact that she's "mildly, um, challenged?"[/spoiler]
