#307: Prison Break-In

The final countdown?

Postby cagedwisdom » December 14th, 2005, 7:36 pm

This episode wasn't great, but so what? It was still better than anything else that was on in the previous six days and 23.5 hours.

All great comedies have their duds from time to time. Remember the fraternity two-parter from Undeclared?

And this episode was far from bad. It was funny, after all. It just wasn't perfect. Count your blessings (how many, five or six left?).

totally agree with cagedwisdom there.

Besides, there were so many funny moments...

I just loved how the school children were acting out Gentile's play.

I agree - not the greatest episode, but it was funny and entertaining. I'm surprised so many people are bothered that most of the family were supportive of having Tobias keep the hairplugs until after the benefit. That isn't out of character for them at all. After all, they were going to try to get Michael to marry Rita, knowing she's a special millionaire.
(BTW, who is to say that they wouldn't try to get Tobias to remove the hairplugs after the GvH event?)

I agree with you, Krindy, on the GM comment. I laughed and I felt sad for him when Narrarator said "this is he happiest moment of his life".

Pattibunn: not only did I find it funny that these kids in the play were acting out those parts so well, it was funny that the parents didn't seem too overly concerned about what their kids were saying!

I didn't think it was anything big, just that all kids like the idea of getting dressed up, going to a nice place - the whole idea of a gala is appealing to a kid in a way that it isn't to an adult.

One of my favorite lines of last night.

No, this isn't a sarcastic line--I didn't catch it the fist time, but listen to Michael's dialogue also:

Michael says that only losers go to galas with their parents. The narrator says that all kids like galas, which tells us that he, the narrator, went to galas with his parents as a kid and is, according to Michael's theory, a loser. It's actually pretty funny.

I thought that this was just saying that even though GM wanted to go to the 'gayla' he didn't want to seem like a loser by his father's definition, in addition to not wanting to be near Tobias.

I thought this episode was hilarious, much better than some of the Rita episodes.

Michael Cera is officially my hero. When is he gonna get nominated for something already? His delivery is just perfect.

The kids acting out the screenplay was pretty funny. It reminded me of "Great Moments in Punditry as Read by Children" from The Daily Show.

GOB's video was awesome (I love how you can see the candy machine lying on the ground in another office in a later shot).

Lot of great subtle stuff, like when Michael says only losers go to galas with their parents and then asks GM if he'd like to go with him.

Anyway, very funny. Plus I loved that Key Decisions was on right after it.

I agree with you. Michael even told Tobias that the hair plugs are sucking the life out of him, but neither Lindsay or Tobias wants to remove them. What should Michael do? They’re both adults, and can make their own decisions regarding their health.
I guess he could have an intervention for Lindsay and Tobias, but we know how those turn out for the Bluth family.

This is probably my favorite episode so far this season. It was funny, it was bizarre... and I love the Tobias storyline.

I agree, though, that showing Key Decisions afterwards was kind of a blow to the new season though. Season 1 was definitely cut from a different cloth.
We may pick on each other, get into little scrapes, call each other names and occasionally steal from each other, but that’s because we're family.

So I have to wonder how long Tracy Bluth was suffering from ovarian cancer. During the pre-TBA-gala flashback, George Sr. laughs at "last night's" Seinfeld episode, "The Hamptons", which originally aired May 12, 1994. I'd had the impression that Tracy had died something like two years before "Pilot", which was in 2003. But I could be wrong, and George could have been referring to a syndicated rerun of Seinfeld that aired years later. Plus, I just might be overanalyzing things a little bit.

Edited to add: Upon further inspection, I see that the first gala's giant check has a date in 1999 printed on it, and that the following year George Michael looks just as he does now, so things are a bit anachronistic.

i freakin loved this episode.... before i forget, im 99% sure that someone mentioned this, but- did anyone notice that busters turtles arm fell off when he removed its carcass from the box???
a few great lines including:
Hey father/uncle dad!
and
Tobias: Oh, come on, don’t leave your Uncle Teabag hanging.
George Michael: Please don’t call yourself that.

oscar: i think this time ill do a podcast.

also, the jetpack thing, when it flew off of GOBs back reminded me of a benny hill type of thing. also- mike cera was spot on in that episode
also love the donny host/ most correction by the narrator
Tobias: Oh, come on, don’t leave your Uncle Teabag hanging.

George Michael: Please don’t call yourself that.

George Michael's reply was refering to 1) not wanting to be near Tobias and 2) not wanting to sound like a loser--you're right about that--I think that the narrator's reply implied that he was a loser when he was a kid and loved going to galas.

it seems as though every one of these episode based threads has a common reoccurring theme with people getting really excited about an episode and then learning what it feels like to get punched in the face all over again...

i think for the few remaining episodes there should be a grouping of preselected responses to each episode since everyone posts the same damn thing week in and week out. here are some of my favorites...

1. this is now my least favorite episode replacing "ready, aim, marry me"

1a. this was worse than "ready, aim, marry me"

1b. i hated this episode, at least i laughed a little during "ready, aim, marry me"

1c. why does everyone hate "ready, aim, marry me"?

2. this episode sucked... but it's still funnier than 99% of everything else on tv

3. after watching it a second time i realized it's not as bad as i thought it was.

4. i wish they would go back to the way things were in season 1

5. the callbacks are really getting old...

6. too much plot and not enough story

7. the narrating has gotten so bad and he explains every little thing and has too many "funny" comments now

8. what's wrong with you people? i loved this episode! it's my new favorite!!!

if anyone can think of any i'm missing feel free to add to the list...

all that said, i'm excited to see the remaining few episodes and would like to be optimistic about it's future, but if this is all we get, let's at least enjoy the ride because it may be over soon. it's too late for the writers to change anything so at this rate any AD is much much better than NO AD.
and hats off to fox for at least giving it more of a chance than the other networks might have... (ooh, maybe that could be #9!)
