#116: Altar Egos

Postby smasherx » January 30th, 2005, 12:38 pm

I find it very difficult to understand why this and companion episode "Justice is Blind" are the lowest ranked. The two episodes contained some of the funniest moments of the first season, not to mention hilarious plotting.

Is it just out of backlash toward Julia Louis-Dreyfus? Be honest now, what was wrong with these episodes?

These were two of my favorite episodes, I loved Julia's performance and the not really blind attorney. I thought that they had some of the best writing of the first season, I love that "On the next Arrested Development, Tobias is sent in to steal evidence, only to discover that Maggie is not really blind." It's like the perfect end to a show.

The scene with the 10 commandments is awesome.

I'm in agreeance (is that a word) with you all. I loved these episodes, maybe it's because there was a lot of punny humor, so people thought them lower. I don't know. I know I only voted one star cause I didnt understand which star to click hehe.

Here's the problems I have with the Maggie Lizer episodes and why they are the lowest ranked for me. First, the whole thing seems so implausible. The Bluths are such public figures that they have had to hire a publicist. This is a high-profile case involving possible treason and would most likely be getting national coverage. And Maggie Lizer is a prominent attorney, if only because she is blind and gets a lot of sympathy. So 1) how in the world could Michael not know who she is and that she is assigned to his father's case. 2) Even if you buy that he somehow didn't- wouldn't the media be all over this? They report on the Bluths every time they make a public spectacle of themselves- yet no one notices that the son of the prosecuted is acting like a drunken jackass and is seen leaving a bar with the prosecutor more than once. This would be a scandal.

Lastly, maybe it's me and I missed something, but I never understood the ending. Perhaps someone can explain it to me. Michael hits Maggie in the face with the Bible and then walks out saying something like 'that's all I've got". It seemed to me like his plan failed because Maggie really was temporarily blind. Yet in the next scene, they are alone discussing how she got kicked off the case. If anything, I would have thought Michael would have been arrested. What happened here?

This ep was my favorite ep, but then I saw it was like the lowest ranked an really surprised. Honestly, arent all the eps a little implausible? But its what makes them so great! I just love the part where he is in the park with her reading the plea bargain. It had just so many funny bits it made it great.

The part about the bible was he wanted to prove she could duck it and prove she could see, but it didnt work. Right before he goes up he goes on about how he could handle it, when it doesnt he work he has no idea what to do. He probably should of been arrested, but where is the fun in that? The ending was great and I think if it was changed it couldnt lead up to the final scene, which is great.

He just made up a name and it was th first one that popped into his head.

Actually, on that topic, I really think he says "Jareth", which is actually a real name.

Thoughts?

Maybe you're right. I was looking for a meaning because I never heard such a name, despite there are some references on the internet, so I thought there was something beyond my knowledge.
I'm not an english speaking person and sometimes I need some hints.
Thanks for your response

I always thought is was "Jareth" too. Jareth is way more common, when I saw it was "Chareth" that was a throw-back. Ive never heard of "Chareth" before.
Michael: You baited the balcony?
Lucille: Prove it.
