MAEBY A MOVIE!!!! AD movie in the works?

Random thoughts about Arrested Development that don't fit into the above categories.

Postby Pont » March 8th, 2007, 5:06 pm

BoxOfficeMojo says Reno cost $10 million. An AD movie would likely cost a bit more, probably around $15 or so. (I forget the figures, but someone estimated how much an episode costed and I think it was somewhere around $2 million. I still suggest setting up a day-and-date deal with someone like HDNet (who already runs episodes, and has a day and date program set up). It'd be released in a select number of theatres (Landmark most likely), and it'd come out on DVD the following tuesday, and be played on HDNet. This would keep costs down, and it would be more contained and have less of a chance of failure (financially).

That said, the movie won't be made.

Fox are known for doing DVD movies with their comedy shows (Family Guy and Futurama, anyone?), and it'd be FAR less risky, especially given that AD's done better on DVD than any other medium.

I've always thought the same thing.

Well, does it link me to a nude Paris Hilton website? Because if it doesn't, I'm not interested.

Here's hope that an Arrested Development movie could one day be made: A "Sex and the City" movie is now in development.

'Sex and the City' heads to theaters
New Line, HBO team on film version of series

By MICHAEL FLEMING

New Line Cinema is getting in bed with HBO on “Sex and the City.”

After much foreplay, the feature version of the long-running HBO series is gearing for a fall start, with New Line near a deal to finance and distribute.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are all set to reprise their roles, with longtime exec producer Michael Patrick King directing a script he wrote.

King will produce with Parker, John Melfi and Darren Star, the latter of whom hatched the series, based on autobiographical columns written by Candace Bushnell.

Fans of the show have clamored for a film version of “Sex and the City” since the series ended.

The pic got close to happening about two years ago,
but progress halted when Cattrall backed away. She wanted script control and a salary close to that of Parker, who was more highly paid than the others because she was co-executive producer of the series. Whatever tensions existed are gone now, sources said. Cattrall has a deal she’s happy with, one the sources said gives her input on her scenes, a fat salary and a future series deal with HBO.

There have long been rumors that supporting cast members like Chris Noth would take part, but New Line has not locked in any such deals.

I remember Jason Bateman, on the commentary for the series finale, he said he'd tell Mitch his idea for the movie once the commentary finished, so hopefully, that gives me a little bit of hope. I'm wondering what's going on with George Sr., Michael and George Michael in Cabo, what's happening to Lucille in prison, and what happened to Gob, Lindsay, Tobias and Buster.

If you scroll down to the end and see the Q&A section Michael Cera says no AD movie is in the works.

Well, that's what I would say if there was an AD movie in the works and I needed to keep it a secret. Or, I now that I think about it, I guess I'd also say that if there wasn't a movie.

But look:

> After a few years hiatus they're making a "Sexy City" movie.

> Word on the street is that an X-File Movie is finally moving forward after, what, 5 years since the show ended?

> It took The Simpsons 18 years to get to the big screen... and judging by the opening weekend grosses, someone is probably kicking themselves for waiting this long.

> And the grandaddy of em all... the first Star Trek movie came 12 years after the show's end. That didn't go too badly.

So as long as there's air in my lungs and Cloud Mir flowing through my blood to my powerful little fingers, there's going to be hope for an A.D. movie.

Those expamples aren't comparable to AD though. Every show you mentioned ran for at least ten seasons or so (some even longer), and were (at least for a time) very highly rated programs. I still think Reno 911 and Strangers with Candy are the closest we have to an example of how it could be done if it were done which it won't because it isn't happening unfortunately.

Actually, Star Trek only ran for three seasons, and was a low rated show throughout its run in danger of cancellation from the start of its run. Fortunately, it had a legion of devoted fans that built the franchise into what it is today.

I used to really hope for a movie, but not as much anymore. After watching Save Our Bluths for the first time in forever a few months ago, I was struck by just how much of an affectionate love note it was to the fans. I mean, when I was so deeply involved it was hard to really see it in context, but when I watched it later, I really got the message. But I also realized how much it conveyed about Mitch's state of mind. An awfully big jump from "this is twice that the academy has rewarded us for something you won't watch" to "maybe the bluths just aren't worth saving". He poured his heart into it, but then had to let it go. I could understand if he wanted to leave that door shut rather than risk being rejected again.

And if anyone hasn't watched SOBs and felt pretty moved, I highly recommend watching it again.

Hey don't give up hope for a movie just yet. I mean just look at how the AD fanbase is still growing even though it's no longer on the air. I'm a good example of that, I never even heard of it while it was on but saw it after it went off the air. It still puzzles my why this show was ever allowed to die its just soo good.

So as long as there are fans like us around there is a good chance that the series will live on.

Long live AD :D

i'm a big arrested development fan, but also a bif firefly and futurama fan. firefly came back as a movie - serenity which was very sucesful, but it didn't re-kindle the firefly series as i had hoped, it was more like a farewell. four futurama movies are also being made - whether or not they will lead on to another series is to be seen. but i dont think arrested development will come back as a series unfortunately even if they make a popular movie out of it :( still better than nothing :P Interesting side note - my top four favourite shows were all cancelled before their time :(

While Firefly did come back as a movie, Serenity, it wasn't very successful at all. In fact, Serenity was a financial failure, as it did not even make back the forty million it cost to make the film, which negates the possibility of there ever being another movie. According to the studio at least.

As for your favorite shows being cancelled before there time, I just don't think people know what they're missing until it's too late. Here's hoping for an AD movie though.

Serenity cos $40 million to make, it grossed $38.8 million at the box office, $9.2 million in dvd/vhs rentals so it's basically made a proffit without taking into account the dvd sales which were high, it was the number one seller on amazon for a while after all. And i remember reading an article a while back entitled "dvd sales push serenity into the black". Although quite how far into the black i couldn't say :P I agree that it couldn't have been a massive money maker or it would have been picked up again.

But i thought that the problem with arrested devlopment in terms of future projects was theat mitch didn't want to do any more, he wanted to spend more time with his familly. -??
