The holdout...

Postby Eiraqucam » November 24th, 2008, 6:05 am

I would really love to hear everyone's opinions on this subject and I have a few questions myself. I decided to revisited Michael Cera's comments on the movie, in a misguided attempt to calm myself. His initial quote was disguised in detail but this one was taken a few weeks after according to wiki, placing it some time mid-to-late September.

"We’re not in production and I haven’t read a script. I know Jason (Bateman) wants to, and I don’t know if Mitch (Hurwitz) wants to. But, I would only want to be a part of it if it was going to be good. Because, it's good to end on a high note, I think, and go out with a bang and leave the winning war. That’s just my instinct. I don’t think it would be worth doing unless it was going to live up to the expectation that might come with it."

Sounds reasonable, also terrifying but it does give me some hope. If the holdout indeed is Michael Cera is it unusual that he would holdout until there's a script? Obviously this is a unique set of circumstances but wouldn't it also be true that we should not assume that he's not interested until the script is written?

I think I prefer this rationale compared with some of the other possibilities. Sorry the post was a bit long but it's the only thing on my mind for the last couple of days and my friends officially told me to shut up this afternoon. Any thoughts?

I think holding out until you can read the script is generally a sensible thing to do but I would trust Mitch Hurwitz to script anything right down to an Arrested Development opera :-)

Anyway I think even if there is a holdout Hurwitz would be able to write his way around it and make it funny. Kind of like how the episode order fuelled the season 2 finale and the cancellation fuelled "S.O.B.S" and "Development Arrested".

I certainly hope Michael Cera doesn't get off on withholding.

However, were he to pass, I think a quality movie could still be done in his absence. I would prefer he participate, but it'd be easy to have George Michael at college or living in Arizona.

I think Cera will be in the movie, how could anyone turn down this movie? The show is a classic and it only lasted 3 seasons, its something special to be apart of.

If Michael Cera isn't in the movie than George-Michael and Mabey will never get together. I think their relationship is key to wrapping up the entire Arrested Development story, movie included. I'm sure I would still love the movie if Michael Cera isn't in it but it just wouldn't be the same.

THANK YOU! Exactly. The George Michael/Maeby relationship was one of the only things truly never resolved on the show and needs to be. Without Michael Cera's involvement that could never happen.

On the subject of our favourite kissing cousins I recentally made a Season One fanvid. Watch it here.

I'd prefer it if cera was in the movie, because the whole cousin thing is a strong part of the show. But if he wont do the movie then i'm sorry but i'd lose alot of respect for him, and it's his loss if he wishes to turn down AD. I'ts the only funny thing i've seen him in. And at the end of the day i'm not really happy with a cast member only doing the movie for money, everyone of them should jump at the chance to bring AD back. Just my opinion :)

The cousin thing is a big part of the show but I would also say it has a well diversified portfolio of incest and fake incest humour to compensate for a bailout by either of the cousins.

There's such a wealth of talent in the large ensemble cast that I don't think we'd miss one character over the course of a two hour movie. George Michael is important in the series because he was the main reason Michael stayed with his family. But who's to say when and where the movie would take place? It could be another development project, a chance reunion, or a prequel. Maybe they could CGI him or maybe he could wear a banana suit the whole time. Or maybe they could get Leonor Varela to play him.

But I'm still cautiously optimistic that he'll do it--he's actually said a fair amount about this topic and he hasn't really ruled it out. I'd think if he truly weren't interested he would try to avoid the topic a bit more. And as stated above, could Mitch really come out with a bad, unacceptable script?

Its like one long line of AD quotes on here, i love it.

Is it confirmed that MC might not be on board or are we still guessing that its him?

If he isnt willing to do the project ( major mistake imo ) then its a big loss to the show, but not something that the guy cant get over.

Alot of the people i have spoken to want to see someone come in an replace MC for the role, i simply dont think that would work.

Just write him out of the script.

Everybody is just assuming it's Michael Cera, but what if it isn't? I've seen some quotes from him that make me think it might be, but he's never explicitly said he wouldn't do it (he would be stupid not to do it, sure he's a bigger star now but he wouldn't be if it wasn't for AD and it's not like he's a household name yet or anything).

I'm more inclined to think it's Portia that's holding out. As someone else mentioned, other than marrying Ellen she's been keeping out of the public eye since AD, and wasn't there some unpleasantness between her and Mitch at some point?

Which cast members are confirmed at this point? Obviously from their quotes in interviews Jason Bateman, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Alia Shawkat, and Tony Hale are all in. Do we know anything about the other cast members? There's not any possibility that Will Arnett is holding out, is there? He's a bigger name now than he used to be and he has a newborn baby (I mean, I know he's been talking about the movie, but was that before they had the baby - has he said anything about it since then?). Or what about Jessica Walter? She's on 90210 now and I seem to remember reading somewhere that she didn't get along well with everybody either.

I hope they get everybody on board, but if they can't I would be least disappointed if it was Portia. I think with all of the crazy stuff that happened at the end of the show, Lindsay would be the easiest character to write out. Lindsay's my least favorite character anyway. Of course, saying that Lindsay is my least favorite AD character is like saying that dark chocolate is my least favorite kind of chocolate. I'd definitely be sad if they couldn't get everybody.
Buster: Mom is becoming a little controlling.
Michael: What tipped you off? When she locked you out on the balcony again?
Buster: That was half my fault. I thought I saw a graham cracker out there.
Michael: You baited the balcony?
Lucille: Prove it.

Jessica Walters has said she'd love to do a movie, and hoping it happens (not for a month or two but I think its fair to say she's in), and I'm sure Will Arnett is in; he's said he'd love to do a film - 'threaten Fox' etc.

I'm leaning towards Portia being the hold-out, altho if it's Michael Cera, I think they should get an actor with a similar shaped body, and blur out his face and beep his lines, and have the narrator say he didn't want to appear in the film. Just kidding!
