Lindsay: Is that a shot at me?

G.O.B.: Probably.

Lindsay: Because, for your information, I have a job.

Michael: Really? What kind of job?

Lindsay: Beads!

G.O.B.: Bees?!

Lindsay: Beads.

G.O.B.: Beads?!Listen

Michael: G.O.B.’s not on board.

CONTEXT

G.O.B.: I’ll handle this one, Michael. Don’t you worry. It will take a lot more than a heart attack to kill that old bear. Old bear! He likes the honey. He never got a chance to see my bee business take off.

Michael: Come on, now, Dad’s going to be around another 30 years, G.O.B. Your business, uh, might not.

G.O.B.: You’re a good brother, Michael. Heart attack never stopped old Big Bear.

I’m sorry, but I just have to restate this again (indulge me)

"Beads."

"Bees?"

"BeadS"

"Beads??!"

.......

"We’re gonna need a lot of money; beads aren’t cheap. Are beads cheap?"

Just the way he says it, all authoritative. Hehee.

Rewatched this on DVD last night and was reminded of how bleeping funny it is.

It’s paydirt for GOB fans. Not only does it have all the hilarious bits noted previously (bees/beads, old Big Bear, etc.)

but also other GOB classics:

- "Macaroni . . . let me finish. . . salad," along with the rest of his completely nonresponsive dialogue with Kitty

- The brilliant monologue at the hospital starting with "I’m in charge now. I speak for this family" to "I’m sick of doing everything for this family."

- "Oh, that is just great. Now I’m expected to climb back on top of Kitty and do my thing again. I mean, this family runs into problems and it’s ’Oh, let’s have G.O.B. (bleep) our way out of it.’" Plus Lucille’s expression, of course.

- "the matriarch, if you will"

Perhaps I am being entirely obtuse here, but is there a hidden joke or meaning to the "bees" theme throughout the episode?

I understand it is just funny, and I may be looking for too much meaning. The part I particularly don’t understand is why GOB is tackled by the guards in prison and Lucille says "They don’t allow you to have bees in here." Is this a reference to something else in the show (or something else in pop culture), or is it just isolated randomness?

#39 Beamer wrote on June 28, 2006:

Have YOU ever tried to take bees into a prison? One word of advice: Don’t.

Although, in all seriousness, I’m pretty sure it’s just isolated randomness. And a great joke about how stupid Gob is. I mean, come on! He thinks that bees would make a good gift! That one little idea alone just says so much about his character. :D

#40 Musty Old Claptrap wrote on June 28, 2006:

"or just as gifts" has to be one of my favourite GOB lines, he sounds so sincere and excited about his little bee business.

TObias keeps bring up "douche chill" in this episode. what dose this refer to?

#42 vcalzone wrote on July 01, 2006:

slang to describe something awkward. More that isn’t really suitable to put here at the Urban Dictionary.

i’m curious about a reference in the "learn" section of the episode:

taker
Michael says Lindsay is a “taker,” a callback to Best Man for the GOB, when Tobias says the family are “pushers not takers.”

is it just me or does this never happen? i remember michael referring to lindsay as a "taker" in the one where they build a house, but nothing at all like that in this episode. the script search i ran backed up my claim. still i’m curious if it’s me that’s missing something.

It’s not just you, it indeed never happens.. well, not in this episode anyway. 8)

I found a couple of subtle call-forwards:

-Kitty asks George to have "one conversation not about my rack" which is a call-forward to the model homes in iraq.

-Annyong and Maeybe play reversi during the "On the next season of Arrested Development" segment. Which I think points to the use of that segment to have big reversals in the plot of the show.
