PROFILE: Michael Bluth

Michael Bluth
PLAYED BY: Jason Bateman
FULL NAME: Michael Bluth
EMPLOYED AS: President, Bluth Co.

Michael is the son of George and Lucille Bluth. He has a twin sister, Lindsay, and a son, George Michael. Michael resides in the model home of the Bluth Company’s new Sudden Valley development.

We take a look at Michael, the current chairman of the Bluth Company, in the third part of our nine-part series profiling Newport Beach’s own Bluth family.

The rise to the top of the Bluth Company was anything but easy for Michael Bluth. Michael first entered the company’s employ in 1980 when he was just a teen at the company’s frozen banana stand on the Newport Beach boardwalk. His successes quickly led him to advancement at the company’s main offices.

So when the elder Bluth was ready to step down as chairman of the Bluth Company, everyone expected Michael to be tapped for the top job. But during a company gathering on the Marina Hornblower, the elder Bluth surprised the heir-apparent and company observers by naming his wife Lucille as the next chairman of the Bluth Company.

Feeling slighted at being passed over for the position, Michael quickly landed a job at the Phoenix, AZ-based Sitwell Corporation. Ms. Bluth named Byron Bluth, Michael’s younger brother, as her successor, but his education in eighteenth-century agrarian business proved insufficient to meet the demanding challenges at the Bluth Company. The Bluth family staged an intervention (or more accurately, an imposition) to rehire Michael Bluth to lead the Bluth Company.

Michael’s first order of business at the Bluth Company was to reassure the investors already shaken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) investigation that led to the arrest of the former chairman, Michael’s father. But Michael’s unsteady demeanor and his profuse amount of sweating at a meeting with investors did little to inspire confidence. During the meeting, questions were raised about the necessary permits. Michael claimed they were filed, but a subsequent investigation by The O.P. failed to turn up the necessary paperwork at the permit office.

Nevertheless, Michael’s ambitious efforts to rein in the runaway spending may end up returning the Newport Beach Bluth Company to its former days of glory.

Michael married his college sweetheart during his sophomore year in college, but she unfortunately passed away recently. They had a son, George Michael. Although Balboa’s most eligible bachelor rarely dated, Michael has recently been linked to such luminaries as Marta Estrella, star of the Spanish-language soap-opera El amor prohibido; and up-and-coming publicist Jessica Bowers.
